SC19 August Need to Know: Smart Cities, ToTA Announcement, Tech Papers in the Schedule, Exhibitor Opportunities, Support for Student Travel
Smart Cities: Computing at the Edge
You’ve probably heard the hype around connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs), but do you know how much of a role HPC plays in making dreams of self-driving cars into reality? Or how researchers in the fields of edge computing, the Internet of Things (IoT), cloud computing and big data are making the world ‘smarter’ every day?
This month, we’ll explore the exciting world of CAVs specifically by interviewing two luminaries in the field: Huei Peng, the Roger L. McCarthy Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Michigan, and Pete Beckman, co-director of the Northwestern-Argonne Institute for Science and Engineering and co-founder of the International Exascale Software Project (IESP).
Read their full interview, which reveals how close we are to the reality of the CAV promise.
Test of Time Award Announcement
One of my favorite awards at SC is the Test of Time Award (ToTA). Each year, we recognize a paper that appeared at SC anywhere from 10 to 25 years ago and that has had a lasting impact on the HPC field.
This year’s winner is a paper from SC08, “Benchmarking GPUs to Tune Dense Linear Algebra”, by Vasily Volkov (NVIDIA) and James Demmel (UC Berkeley). This paper was chosen because of its first-of-its-kind vision of GPU architectures as vector machines. Since 2008, this vision has resulted into a way of thinking and modeling algorithms on GPUs that still guide others in pursuing and obtaining high performance across the GPU community.
Volkov and Demmel will share thoughts about their paper and receive their award in an invited talk at SC19 on Tuesday 3:30 PM – 4:15 PM in the Mile High Ballroom.
Accepted Technical Papers Announced and More
Papers are at the core of the SC Technical Program, and we are excited to announce that the schedule for this year’s accepted Papers is now live. We think you will be as thrilled as our volunteer reviewers were with the variety and relevance of this year’s topics.
Speaking of our volunteers, many of them spent their summer reviewing submissions for ACM Student Research Posters, Birds of a Feather, Doctoral Showcases, Early Career, Posters, and SciViz artifacts. Stay tuned for notifications of their final choices at the beginning of September!
Exhibitor Opportunities Abound at SC19
I am often asked why organizations should exhibit at SC19. The answer is simply that SC offers the best chance to connect with others in the field, to showcase products and ideas, and to find potential new employees. Here’s a small overview of all we have to offer exhibitors:
- HPC Impact Showcase: Highlights real-world HPC applications at organizations, both large and small, who are currently employing HPC to advance their competitiveness and innovation in the global marketplace.
- Exhibitor Forum: Offers manufacturers, vendors, and HPC service providers with a venue to deliver technical presentations open to both Exhibits and Program attendees.
- Job Fair: The place to find your next colleague among the best students and postdocs in the field.
- Startup Café: Provides a special space for small, emerging companies to introduce their products, tools, and services to the HPC community. Watch a short video about this successful new addition to SC.
Support the Next Generation
The deadline to nominate your colleagues for the IEEE Computer Society TCHPC Early Career Researchers Award for Excellence in HPC is August 15. There is also still an opportunity to support student travel to SC19, particularly for undergraduates. If your organization would like to help, please contact the Students@SC committee.
More Exciting Announcements to Come
As conference week comes ever closer, we are finalizing more pieces of the schedule – pieces like the keynote! Keep in touch via the blog and social and be one of the first to learn who will be launching SC19.
And don’t forget that registration is already open; snag the best prices now!
