I have worked in research computing for 20 years; having a PhD and MSc in visualization. I worked on 4 academic research projects 3 of which while based in an IT services department and the 4th one in the Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering at the University of Leeds. I have worked on local, regional and national academic supercomputing services and with cutting edge computing technologies including visualization, virtual reality, eScience and high performance computing (HPC) for both research purposes and service provision.
I was based in the University of Manchester for 15 years and there it was part of my job to help researchers to be early adopters of computing technologies and so boost their academic outputs. My primary interest is in improving the use of computers for research purposes. This has led me to develop a strong interest in the innovation and adoption of computing practices and technologies.

In 2011 I edited a 2 volume book on research computing called “The Handbook of Research on Computational Science and Engineering: Theory and Practice” with Wes Sharrock. I am currently in the Women in HPC group that aims to improve the diversity within research computing and The Superposition an Arts, Science and Maker collective.
