The SC19 Workshops Schedule Is Live!
With the help of an outstanding workshop program committee, we have selected 36 workshops (25 full-day and 11 half-day) that will run the show on Sunday, Monday, and Friday. These topical workshops are bringing together hardware and software trends spanning various subjects including data analysis, visualization, machine learning for HPC, deep learning, performance benchmarking, parallel computing, correctness, computational reproducibility along with education for HPC. This broader set of topics is just another testimony of how SC19 is reaching out and including new communities.
New Topics Promote SC Workshops as an Incubator
Workshops at SC have indeed been incubators for new ideas. Just a few years ago, machine learning experts interested in HPC were gathering at SC in the “Machine Learning in HPC Environments” workshop. Today, SC19 has made the ML community a first class citizen with the new track in the Technical Paper Program. SC is constantly looking for the next big new topic. New workshops with exciting topics this year are:
- XLOOP – Throws light on the necessity to discuss novel approaches to merge simulation ensembles and volumes experimental data sets in order to think about high performance data management, transfer techniques and workflows thus attracting both the physical and computer sciences communities.
- Containers and New Orchestration Paradigms for Isolated Environments in HPC (CANOPIE HPC) – Focuses on “containerization in HPC” that has revolutionized the way software and services are handled.
- Photonics – Focuses on exploring novel approaches from the silicon fabrication standpoint diving deeper into the hardware trends and post Moore’s law challenges.
- Interoperability of Supercomputing and Cloud Technologies – Pushes us to think about adopting scientific applications to cloud interfaces and expose supercomputing technology to on-demand and interactive provisioning of services that are second nature to cloud computing.
- Urgent HPC – As the name indicates, puts forth challenges that one would counter while moving away from conventional computing techniques in order to encounter real-life disasters such as flooding or earthquakes.
- Interactive HPC – Looks into strategies to interactively explore large datasets, compute resources, and offer interactive workflows.
The Effort From an International and Diverse Community
A broader participation of an inclusive community makes Workshops at SC19 the place to go to meet people from all around the world. Workshop organizers span continents and are more and more diverse:
- 50% of accepted workshops have international participation with one or multiple organizers from countries outside of the US.
- 50% of accepted workshops also have one or multiple organizers who are female, which confirms the growing leadership of women in HPC.
It is fantastic to see SC being an increasingly global community!
A Little Bit of SC Workshop History
We also looked into the workshop trends, which means, how many times have these workshops co-located their program with the SC series. Workshops like PMBS, IA^3, and Scalable Algorithms have been gathering their community for the past 10 years at SC. WORKS has been a successful workshop at SC for the past 12 years. Other workshops range from their first to ninth editions co-located with SC. This is quite an amazing achievement considering all of these workshops have been peer-reviewed by a rigorous committee of experts.
